5 footballers who believe in aliens – from Chris Smalling to Gareth Bale
'Are we really alone?' is a question that is asked so often that even professional footballers ponder its possibility.
After all, there are estimated to be more planets in the universe than grains of sand in the entire Sahara Desert.
And a whole host of famous footballing faces have come out to wage their opinions on the 'are we alone' debate.
Others, however, have gone one step further, and some have even claimed to be abducted by aliens, including footballing and Napoli legend Diego Maradona.
And Daily Star Sport is looking at five footballers who believe in aliens.
Diego Maradona
Where else to start but arguably one of the greatest footballers of all time, at Napoli, Maradona elevated a small Italian side to one of the best in Europe.
El Pibe de Oro even bagged himself a World Cup, and he was named as FIFA's player of the century alongside Pele.
However, he once claimed to have been abducted by Aliens: “Why make things up?
"Once, after a few too many drinks, I was missing from home for three days.
"I got home and said that UFOs had taken me. I said ‘They took me, I can’t tell you about it'."

Gareth Bale
"The evidence is everywhere. People need to research it," Gareth Bale bizarrely told Sky Sports while on loan at Tottenham Hotspurs last season.
"I’ve been looking into it for years and obviously, there’s a lot of fake stuff out there.
"But I think the US government recently released a few images, a few video footages, of Unidentified Flying Objects, so it’s all online.
"And I think there are a few programmes on Netflix and stuff. So, yes, it’s interesting. I’m quite into it and that’s why I believe it.
"The amount of sightings we have – they can’t all be false."
Stadio Artemio Franchi
And speaking of UFO sightings, the Stadio Artemio Franchi, home of Fiorentina, once played host to a mass sighting during a game.
It was 27 October 1954, and Fiorentina were taking on their Pistoiese local rivals at the stadium.
"It was something that looked like an egg that was moving slowly, slowly, slowly. Everyone was looking up and also there was some glitter coming down from the sky, silver glitter," Ardico Magnini recalled to an Italian paper.
"We were astonished we had never seen anything like it before. We were absolutely shocked."
The game had to be stopped as players and fans looked to the skies in bemusement.
Chris Smalling
Former Manchester United star Chris Smalling once claimed to have seen a UFO while holidaying in Jamaica with his wife Sam Cooke.
"Chris and I saw an amazing UFO last night!" Cooke wrote on her Instagram story.
"It flew down in front of us and then turned around and went back up into the sky where it stayed for an hour.
"Chris could see it spinning with lights, flashing everywhere.
"We were too stunned to take out our phones and we didn't want to look away for fear of losing sight of it, whatever it was."
Guillermo Marino
Guillermo Marino once claimed he was late for a training session with Universidad de Chile, because he had been abducted by aliens.
"He says that he arrived late to one training because he was abducted by aliens. He gave us the entire explanation of what he felt and the rest of it," his former teammate Gustavo Lorenzetti, told Lado B.
"He started to explain that he was suddenly lost and abducted by aliens. He explained that they take out your soul, analyse it and all the while on the journey they are looking after you.
"He said something like that.
"Honestly, I believe in aliens. He gave a great explanation, and we will have to believe him," Lorenzetti went on to confirm.
