5 clubs that have rejected Man Utd wantaway Cristiano Ronaldo as Dortmund say no

Cristiano Ronaldo is looking for an exit – but at present, he's struggling to find a way out of Manchester United.

The Portugal international is reportedly vying for a way out of Old Trafford but so far he's come up short. There have been plenty of major clubs linked – the veteran attacker is after Champions League football by most accounts, something his current club can't offer – but for various reasons, those clubs have pulled out talks or have not been willing to discuss taking the attacker on at all.

As such, we thought we would take a look at some of those teams and dig into just what happened.

Chelsea

Chelsea could have offered Ronaldo Champions League football, but it appears Thomas Tuchel has decided to opt for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead of the star.

It is thought Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes had met with the club’s owner Todd Boehly over the summer and one of the elements discussed was a move for Ronaldo to the west London club.

But in the end, the German manager opted for another name.

PSG

Paris Saint-Germain may have seemed a likely choice for Ronaldo given they can afford his wages and provide Champions League football.

But in the end, with the pragmatic new director of football Luis Campos at the helm, the move was never going to happen. The executive is much more in tune with the younger generation, making shrewd buys like Hugo Ekitike.

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund were the latest club to say they could not bring in the star player.

The side's chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke insisted he is not in talks to sign Ronaldo, saying: "I love him as a player, it's certainly a charming idea. To see Cristiano Ronaldo play at Signal Iduna Park… But there is no contact at all between the parties involved. So from now on, you should stop talking about it."

Dortmund could be the latest and final club to disappoint the star.

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich chief Oliver Kahn played down reports linking Bayern Munich with a move for Ronaldo.

When the side officially unveiled Matthijs de Ligt, the former goalkeeper was asked about other areas of the side he may wish to strengthen.

"We have been fast on the market this summer. It is very exciting. You are asking about Ronaldo right [laughs in denial]. The window is still open for some for time and we are in talks with several players and things can still happen," he said.

It was a doubling-down from when he said previously: "As highly as I rate Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the greatest, a transfer wouldn't be a fit with our philosophy. I love Cristiano Ronaldo and everyone knows how fantastic he is. But every club has a certain philosophy and I'm not sure if it would be the right thing for Bayern and the Bundesliga if we signed him now."

Real Madrid (sort of)

Real Madrid's top scorer and arguably greatest ever player back to the side? Not if Florentino Perez has anything to do with it.

The president was cheekily asked about signing Ronaldo. Footage showed Perez in a lobby being asked by fans if he plans to make a bid for the forward. The Real boss responded: "Sign Cristiano? Again? He's 38-years-old".

Another one down the toilet for Ronaldo then.
