15 players in Spain Women’s team threaten to quit if head coach is not sacked

15 players have threatened to quit the Spanish women’s national team if head coach Jorge Vilda is not sacked.

All 15 players sent emails to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) stating they would resign if Vilda is still in charge. As well as questioning the Spaniard's methods, players have also cited their "emotional state" and "mental health" would be affected if he is not given his marching orders.

Currently, the RFEF are standing by the 41-year-old manager who has been in charge since 2015. Not only has the Spanish governing body accused the rebelling players of a ‘very serious infraction’ they have also demanded apologies from the individuals involved.

"The RFEF can confirm that, throughout today, we received 15 emails from 15 players of the women's senior football team,” a statement read. “They state that the current situation affects 'significantly' their emotional state and their health and that, 'as long as it is not reversed', they resign from the Spanish national team.

"The RFEF is not going to allow the players to question the continuity of the national coach and his coaching staff, since making those decisions does not fall within their powers."

Sources close to the Spanish women’s team, which was knocked out of the European Championships by England in the quarter-finals, understand the players have grown tired of the management of injuries, the atmosphere, the team selections, and the training sessions under Vilda.

The RFEF have not revealed the identities of the 15 players involved, but Spanish reports understand Barcelona ace and Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas is not involved. They also understand the Spanish players who ply their trade for Real Madrid are not part of the 15.

When asked about the jaw-dropping situation emanating from the Spain team, Chelsea manager Emma Hayes called for ‘some good listening in both directions’ to help alleviate the problems. "I hope that there's some common ground and some good listening in both directions," Hayes said to Sky Sports.

"Ultimately that team is amazing and deserves to be performing at the highest level. I hope they sort through those differences. I hope there's sensible conversations, you have to have dialogue to resolve differences and that's something that between them they have to try and create."
