"Your f****** last one" – Eddie Jones’ warning to England’s Jonny Hill

England coach Eddie Jones isn't known for mincing his words, so it rarely stuns to learn when a player finds themselves on the receiving end of a few choice profanities.

But it was more surprising to learn the Australian has discouraged Exeter Chiefs lock Jonny Hill from unleashing his silky skills with the boot upon future opponents.

Forwards aren't exactly known for their kicking capabilities, and second rows in particular carry a reputation as being some of the bigger, clunkier members of any given squad.

Enter England star Hill, who delighted fans in April when he took it upon himself to clear Exeter's lines en route to a 20-12 victory over Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate:

Fly-half Joe Simmonds was nowhere to be seen at the time, but neither was he required as Hill nudged his side 50 metres up the pitch with a touch-finder to make any kicker green with envy.

Player turned pundit Ugo Monye even likened the 6'7" star to six-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi, such was the aplomb with which he bombed the ball downfield.

But Hill's international coach wasn't among his admirers and let the lock know how he felt about him stepping outside his usual remit.

The 27-year-old recounted his experience after gushing over the kick and told RugbyPass how Jones brought him back down to earth in unforgiving fashion.

“I kicked the ball against Bristol last year [a separate incident to the above]," he said. "It was like a grubber down the wing and I was like, yeah, that was a bad decision.

Do you think Jonny Hill should start for England, and who should be his lock partner? Let us know in the comments section.

“He called me up and said ‘How do you think you’re going?’ and I was like ‘yeah, I made a kick at the weekend.’

“And he was like ‘Yeah, you made two kicks mate. That one and your ****ing last one'.

“I was like right. Roger that.

“And then I like kicked one three months after against Bristol. These 50:22s, I’m loving it.”

Unfortunately for Hill, the 50:22 law was yet to start its one-year trial phase at the time of his boot, but it would result in an Exeter line-out deep in enemy territory if he were to pull it off today.

The rule change featured internationally this summer and is now in play for Europe's club teams, but successful executions of the 50:22 kick are still rather few and far between.

Warren Gatland certainly didn't mind Hill's confidence kicking out of hand after selecting him for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa.

Hill failed to make a Test appearance during the series but did play the full 80 minutes in warm-up games against the Sigma Lions, Sharks and the Stormers, scoring against the latter.

It was another of Hill's Exeter team-mates, Will Witty, who showed a classy pair of feet en route to scoring in a 25-15 win away to Sale Sharks last Sunday.

The second row blocked a Sharks clearance before dribbling over the line from the edge of Sale's 22-metre line, leading Hill to heap praise on his lock comrade: "He [Will Witty] is so silky as well.

“It’s brilliant. He doesn’t know what to do. He gets all embarrassed when they bring it up.”

That was the first game last season's runners-up have won in three Premiership games so far this season, hoping to make it back-to-back victories when they host Worcester Warriors on Saturday.

Hill comes into the starting line-up to partner Witty in his first appearance since returning from the Lions tour, although he may heed Jones' warning before being tempted to put boot to ball in the near future.
