Wayne Pivac hailed the character of his Welsh side as they came from 14-points down to beat Scotland and rise to the top of the Six Nations table.

They were hugely helped by a red card shown to Scotland tight-head Zander Fagerson, when they had wrestled back from 17-3 down to 17-15, after he hit Wyn Jones in the face with his shoulder at a ruck.

But Pivac was delighted with the turnaround at Murrayfield, in which Louis Rees-Zammit scored two tries.

Wales go top of the Six Nations table for now after their win over 14-man Scotland

‘We showed a lot of character,’ he said. ‘At 17-3 it wasn’t going to script, but we gathered our thoughts and the leadership on the field was good.

‘We came away with that score before half time which was vital for us going into the changing room.

‘It’s a very pleasing start. I think it was evident for everyone that it wasn’t a complete performance.

‘It’s round two of the tournament and we’ll expect to be improving each time we take the field.’

Louis Rees-Zammit scored two tries as Wales held on for their second consecutive win

On his 20-year-old hero Rees-Zammit, who chipped and chased for his sensational second, the boss said:

‘He was exciting with the ball, wasn’t he? He’s got confidence with the ball in hand. He’s got the pace and you can’t coach that.

‘The skill, with the kick, was magnificent. He’s going to be a very exciting player for us.’

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend was not happy with the red card, though.

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend was unhappy with the red card given to Zander Fagerson

‘It’s obviously very serious when someone gets a red card and it just felt that there wasn’t the right angles or a proper discussion,’ he said.

‘It looked like it was played in slow motion on one angle rather than actually going, ‘was there late movement, was there a clear strike of the head?’

‘One of the angles I saw, I don’t know if there was.’

Captain Stuart Hogg, who scored twice along with Darcy Graham, added after the defeat: ‘On another day, we probably win that game.’
