France’s best player Antoine Dupont has tested positive for Covid, throwing their Six Nations challenge into further turmoil.

The scrum-half is now the fourth member of the French set-up to catch the virus in a matter of days after head coach Fabien Galthie, assistant William Servat and another unnamed coach in the backroom staff.

Dupont – regarded by many as the world’s best player – was pictured alongside Galthie on Monday night, when both virtually attended an awards night for French sports newspaper Midi Olympique and neither wore a mask.

It is now expected he will miss the Scotland match at Stade de France next Saturday, as he will have to isolate for 10 days, as per updated French government rules.

The French Rugby Federation (FFR) said that Dupont is so far asymptomatic but he would be ‘isolated, in accordance with health protocols.’

After Galthie tested positive following the trip to Dublin where Les Bleus beat Ireland the French tested all of their 31-man squad.

So far 11 players – including captain Charles Ollivon – have come back negative, with Dupont the only positive. France are unbeaten so far in the Six Nations, and have matches against the Scots, England and Wales to come in the final three rounds.
