Wayne Carey will not return to Triple M footy commentary team

Radio station Triple M has confirmed that Wayne Carey is no longer a part of its AFL commentary team.

The station said on Wednesday that Carey had concluded his contract for 2022 and will not be back as part of its football team in 2023.

Carey was taken off-air by the station after he was ejected from Perth’s Crown Casino when a small bag containing a powdered substance fell out of his pocket while gambling late last month.

The former North Melbourne champion said the bag contained a legal painkiller, branded Aleve, which he took crushed up during dinner to manage his neck and shoulder injuries from his decorated career in the AFL.

Southern Cross Radio’s chief content officer Dave Cameron wished Carey well for his future.

“On behalf of Triple M we would like to thank Wayne for his services to our football commentary team, and we wish him the best for the future,” Cameron said.

Carey and Seven have agreed he would temporarily stand down as a TV commentator for AFL games while awaiting the outcome of a WA Police investigation into the incident.

Seven said on Wednesday it was still waiting for that investigation to conclude. WA Police said on Tuesday its investigation was ongoing.

In his first public appearance since the incident last Thursday night, Carey demanded a “thorough police investigation” into the incident.

Carey, who is also employed by The Age as a columnist, has retained legal firm Maurice Blackburn to assess whether he was unlawfully discriminated against.
