‘Sorry’ Eels star breaks silence on ‘lazy’ tackle that sent Rooster to hospital

Eels five-eighth Dylan Brown has publicly apologised for his careless and “lazy” sliding tackle that saw him suspended and Roosters star Drew Hutchison sent to hospital.

Hutchison was left with broken ribs and a punctured lung after Brown led with his knees in the Round 9 clash between the Eels and Roosters.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson was furious it took until after halftime for Brown to be reprimanded, while Hutchison’s injuries have been so severe that he has returned to hospital three times since the incident.

Brown copped a three week ban and broke his silence over the ugly incident ahead of his return for the Eels against the Knights in Round 13.

“I seriously thought nothing of it, I didn’t realise,” Brown said.

“Then I watched the video back and I was like ‘Yeah, that was just lazy from me, really’. I just didn’t tackle.

“I’m sorry to him.”

Brown revealed he sought out Hutchison in the dressing sheds after the match to apologise only to be told that the Roosters half had been sent to hospital.

“I actually went after the game to try and find him, but he was rushed to hospital,” Brown said.

“So, I reached out to him on Instagram and sent him a message.

“He said, ‘It’s just a game, it happens’. So, I was thankful for that, that he wasn’t holding a grudge or anything because honestly, there was no intention there.”

Brown admits he feels partly responsible for the NRL’s crackdown on foul play which was put into effect the following week in Magic Round.

In the same play as the Brown incident Marata Niukore hit Roosters fullback James Tedesco with a high shot.

“Yeah, I feel like that one incident with me and Marata has sort of come from that,” Brown said.

“But in all honesty, he was in hospital. And no one wants that happening to a player. V’landys says, it’s to keep everyone safe so we’ve got to follow it.”
