Roosters skipper Cordner to retire over concussion issues

Australian, NSW and Roosters captain Boyd Cordner is set to retire from rugby league due to ongoing concerns about the long-term effects of repeated concussions.

Cordner, 29, is expected to announce his retirement at the SCG on Monday despite still having more than two years left to run on his contract with the Roosters.

The Roosters have already been rocked by long-term ACL injuries to Brett Morris, Luke Keary and Lindsay Collins this season. Morris announced in the past fortnight he has also played his final game.

Cordner will finish with 181 games for the Roosters, 20 Tests for Australia and 16 State of Origin appearances. Mal Meninga appointed him the Kangaroos captain following the representative retirement of Cameron Smith.

Cordner won three premierships with the Roosters in 2013, 2018 and 2019, the first of which came after he returned from a lengthy injury lay-off to play in the grand final.

Cordner’s retirement should allow the Roosters to head into the player market given he was to be one of their highest-paid players in 2022 and 2023.

The NRL will assess whether Cordner will be medically retired once they receive his medical records, which could exclude his salary from the club’s cap.
