Pearce officially asks Knights for a release to head to Super League
Mitchell Pearce has formally asked Newcastle for a release, with the parties now working towards an outcome that will allow him to finish his career in France.
Pearce has reportedly received a three-year, $1.5 million offer to join Super League outfit Catalans that he is keen to take up. To do so, he must first broker a release from the final year of his Knights contract. The Knights may only accede to the request if after they find a suitable replacement or receive a transfer fee as compensation.
The club released a statement confirming officials met with Pearce on Tuesday night and again on Wednesday to discuss the issue.
“The Knights have agreed to consider the request, with both parties respectfully agreeing to make no further comment until an outcome is determined,” the Knights said in a statement.
“Discussions between Pearce and the club remain productive, with both parties focussed on achieving a positive outcome while maintaining the great relationship that currently exists.
“No specific timeline has been determined on an outcome for the request, with all involved continuing to follow the due process required.”

The development comes as league Immortal Andrew Johns agreed to take up a coaching consultancy role with the club. Johns had been engaged as a halves coach at Parramatta for the past two years, helping halfback Mitchell Moses elevate his game despite the challenges COVID-19 lockdowns have posed.
However, Johns agreed to return to Newcastle, the club with which he made his name as arguably the game’s greatest halfback.
One of Johns’ first tasks will be to mentor a replacement for Pearce. The Knights have playmakers Jake Clifford, Adam Clune, Kalyn Ponga, Tex Hoy and Phoenix Crossland on their books but will likely go to market for a Pearce replacement.
Pearce’s departure may fast track Ponga’s shift from fullback to five-eighth.
