Newcastle fans love rugby league, but how much?

What type of crowd are we going to get at McDonald Jones Stadium? We all know the Novocastrians love their league, but this might test them on a Thursday night in the middle of the State of Origin period.

Tips time. I struggled with this game and it might be the hardest one of the week. I’ve tipped the Storm, but with very little confidence. I reckon they’ll scramble home by two points and stay on top of the NRL ladder. I reckon Justin Olam will grab a try at some stage tonight as well.

Who have you got?

Another crazy day in the NRL

Just another slow news day in the NRL. As I like to say, it’s a soap opera not a sport.

This story might take some beating this week though: just a few days after Kevin Walters said out-of-favour stars Matt Lodge and Tevita Pangai jnr would stay at Red Hill for the rest of the season, surprise surprise. Lodge is now leaving for the Warriors – with immediate effect.

Three days is a lifetime in the great game of rugby league.

Catch up on Lodge’s Brisbane exit and the defection of Roosters stalwart Isaac Liu to the Titans in Michael Chammas’ piece here.

Origin stars all on show

How can you begrudge the NRL for keeping the competition going in these chaotic times, but how about a quiet word with their scheduling chief? We’re four days after Origin II and we have the two powerhouses of the last decade playing each other.

The Roosters have James Tedesco and Angus Crichton backing up from NSW’s series-sealing 26-0 win in Brisbane, while the Storm will have four – Josh Addo-Carr, Cameron Munster, Christian Welch and Felise Kaufusi – trying to make it 13 straight wins.

There will be some tried boys out there by the end of the night.

Welcome to Thursday night footy

It’s Thursday night. We’re locked down. And thank goodness there’s some footy on the TV to help this blogger through another day of stay-at-home orders with young kids. Anyone else feeling the pain?

Just to prove what a strange world we live in, I present to you tonight’s game: Sydney v Melbourne in Newcastle. Just when you thought you’ve seen it all.

Maybe the only person busier than all the stay-at-home mums and dads during school holidays is the Storm’s football manager, who has had to ensure the squad fled Queensland earlier this week to get back to Melbourne before they charter a flight to Newcastle for tonight’s game.

Confused?
