The 34-year-old was playing for Maroochydore in a reserve grade match when he made an effective tackle during the game.

Queensland Rugby League has released a statement saying it was saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Mr Best.

The QRL has received a detailed report, with witnesses confirming there was no evidence in the tackle of a head or neck injury, nor any report of foul play.

The statement said he briefly stabilised on his knees after making the tackle before collapsing.

“Best was immediately treated on the field by multiple Level 2 sports trainers who performed CPR before an ambulance arrived,” the statement said.

“Paramedics attempted to stabilise the player, who was subsequently taken to hospital, where sadly he was later reported as deceased.”

The organisation send its condolences to Best’s family and friends and the Maroochydore club.

“The QRL and rugby league community send their most sincere condolences to Best’s family and friends, as well the Maroochydore club,” the statement said.

“The QRL will continue to assist the club through this difficult time and is providing wellbeing support.”

A man who says he was Mr Best’s brother took to social media to express his grief.

“RIP Dale, I love you,” he said.

“We may have lost you last night but we will not forget you.

“Say hi to Dad for us. Love you brother.”

The family offer their deepest thanks to all those who assisted, including sports trainers, paramedics and hospital staff, The QRL statement said.
