Klemmer returns to Knights training, club faces racism allegation

David Klemmer returned to training with Newcastle on Friday in the biggest indication yet the parties are close to resolving their differences.

The development comes with the club embroiled in a fresh scandal after a prominent Knights staffer allegedly made a racist remark to an Indigenous reserve grade player.

Klemmer was stood down for Sunday’s clash with Wests Tigers after receiving a show-cause notice. He was poised to front the board next week after allegedly refusing to be substituted and swearing at trainer Hayden Knowles during last weekend’s loss to the Bulldogs.

The former NSW prop was initially told not to train with his teammates until the matter was resolved after it was referred to the club’s human resources department. However, he was spotted training alongside his teammates on Friday, raising hopes he will be available for next week’s clash against Brisbane.

The 28 year old’s presence with his peers is the firmest pointer towards an amicable resolution despite initial suggestions his time at the club could be over.

The Knights could also have another controversy to deal with. The Newcastle Herald reported that a staffer told a young Indigenous player to “stop playing like a blackfella and get back to the structure” during the half-time break of a lower-grade game. The club is aware of the issue and is dealing with it privately.
