Tasmania will have a team in the AFL competition after the 18 clubs agreed to the entry of a 19th team.
The club presidents backed the AFL’s plan for a Tasmanian team – which was subject to a stadium deal – at a meeting on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese formally unveiled $240 million in federal funding for a new stadium in Hobart on Saturday.
The final hurdle is a ratification of the team’s entry by the AFL Commission, which is a formality after outgoing AFL boss Gillon McLachlan and his team secured federal government funding for a custom-built stadium in Tasmania.
McLachlan will be in Hobart on Wednesday for the announcement of Tasmania’s entry into the competition, expected to be in either 2027 or 2028.
There was no vote required of the presidents.
