Cancer recurs for Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty
Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty has revealed his testicular cancer has recurred, telling his social media followers “life has thrown another curveball my way”.
Docherty had a cancerous lump removed from his testicle last November. On Monday evening, he shared on Instagram that he would have to undergo another round of chemotherapy.

“It’s hard to know the right way to share this, I think the most important thing to do is to own my story authentically,” he said.
“In doing so, I hope to allow the narrative to run as it is intended. With purpose and to minimise speculation.
“Unfortunately life has thrown another curveball my way and my testicular cancer has recurred, sadly meaning that I will need to undergo a round of chemotherapy.”
Docherty said that while he was looking forward to getting back out to the track for pre-season, his current focus was his health.
He urged people to get checked “if anything doesn’t feel right”, and later revealed in a joint statement with Carlton Football Club that the secondary occurrence of his cancer was detected during a routine medical check-up.
“I am very fortunate this secondary diagnosis was detected early as part of a routine check-up. We now have a clear plan in place to get through this,” he said.
Carlton head of football Brad Lloyd said it was providing its full support to the co-captain, who would undergo chemotherapy for 12 weeks. Docherty was expected to make a full recovery and return for pre-season training.
“Right now, Sam’s health is the number one priority and he will be given all the support he needs as he undergoes the necessary treatment to allow him to recover fully,” Lloyd said.
“Sam is an incredibly resilient person, a strong character and the entire Carlton family is behind him every step of the way.”
Docherty asked for people to respect his privacy through this difficult time.
