Toto Wolff has revealed the circumstances in which he would walk away from Mercedes as the German manufacturer continues to struggle. The Mercedes boss explained he may be ready to quit if he felt he was no longer contributing.
He could also look into “passing the baton” if others at the squad admitted he was running out of ideas to take the constructor forward. He said: “I really enjoy being the team leader of this team. I think I can make my contribution.
“But if one day I come to that conclusion – or if people close to me tell me I’m not contributing – then I’ll consider passing the baton to someone else. I wouldn’t be ashamed of that. Then I would criticise from the sidelines, from a TV screen, and know better than everyone else. But until then I think I’ll keep enjoying it.”
His comments come after Lewis Hamilton piled pressure on Mercedes bosses over the new W14. Ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Hamilton stressed chiefs did not listen to him on the car’s development direction.

He has since doubled down on his stance, suggesting he was left satisfied after telling team bosses that they were wrong. This is despite the squad having a no-blame culture where individuals are not targeted.
Hamilton explained: “I’m one of those people that always likes to be right, but I’m not always right, but in this scenario I was right. So it was good, it was like, ‘I told you’. It’s a team collaboration.” The eight-time Constructors’ champions continue to struggle with their design for a second successive season.
The German marque may have taken a backwards step from last season with Aston Martin now quicker. However, Russell still managed a respectable P4 in Saudi Arabia and came close to securing their first podium of the season.

Despite this, Wolff sent his engineers back to the drawing board to come up with a new concept. A new model is believed to have been tested in the wind tunnel ahead of Jeddah.
However, the team have previously confirmed that no major upgrades are expected to be installed into the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the end of May. Wolff has still backed his crew to find a solution to take them forward.
He told SpeedWeek: “We’ve been through all the ups and downs and there’s not a millimetre of doubt. There’s so much support from them to get us back on track. We couldn’t ask for better support.”
