Schumacher raises ‘big question mark’ over Hamilton joining Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton has no reason to consider leaving Mercedes for Ferrari as Ralf Schumacher believes the Italian outfit have a “big question mark” hanging over them at the moment. Hamilton’s future at Mercedes is once again up for debate with discussions over a new deal still ongoing.

Both Toto Wolff and Hamilton have maintained confidence that an agreement will be made and history has proven that both parties are prepared to wait until the very last minute. But, with this potentially being Hamilton’s last contract in F1, speculation on whether the Briton would consider a move elsewhere has increased in recent weeks.

A report emerged over the weekend that Ferrari were preparing a huge offer to prise Hamilton away from Mercedes. The 38-year-old has admitted in the past that driving for Ferrari would be a “dream”, but a move never materialised.

However, Schumacher has brushed off the latest speculation linking Hamilton with Ferrari as nothing more than a “rumour”. “Hamilton is very happy where he is right now,” Schumacher told Sky Germany.

“Even Ferrari is a big question mark at the moment.” The 47-year-old, younger brother to F1 icon Michael Schumacher, also doubts why Mercedes would look to make a straight swap for Charles Leclerc as it would be seen as a downgrade on current form.

“Honestly, if you look at the error rate, the pure driving performance of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, there are no two opinions that Hamilton at the moment is the more consistent pilot,” Schumacher added. “Even with a car that doesn’t work at the moment, Mercedes is often ahead of Ferrari.

“So that doesn’t make any sense. That’s why I don’t think Ferrari is an alternative.”

Part of the reason negotiations have been ongoing for so long is that both Wolff and Hamilton regard each other as close friends. And the Mercedes team principal admits that makes it even tougher to ultimately discuss money.

“It’s just uncomfortable that two friends, two blood brothers who have been through thick and thin for ten years, suddenly have to discuss money,” Wolff said. “I’m firmly convinced that we’ll find each other, there’s not a millimetre of doubt for me.”
