Red Bull boss fires another swipe at Lewis Hamilton over Max Verstappen smash
Red Bull boss Christian Horner has taken another swipe at Lewis Hamilton following his collision with Max Verstappen.
The team principal had some harsh words for the seven-time world champion following the British Grand Prix, which saw his driver spin off at turn one and crash into the wall.
Now the 47-year-old has taken a fresh dig at Hamilton, stating that Verstappen was not to blame for the incident.
When asked to evaluate the first half of the season, Horner replied: “At no point do we feel that [we've been] absolutely in control.
“We’ve won six races in the first half of the year. The races we haven’t scored at: Azerbaijan wasn’t Max’s fault [a tyre problem put him out late on while leading], Silverstone wasn’t Max’s fault, here [Hungary] wasn’t Max’s fault, so our luck will change.”
Red Bull amassed a 44-point lead over rivals Mercedes after Verstappen won the French, Styrian and Austrian Grands Prix.
But the 23-year-old registered just two points from the last two races, while Hamilton won at Silverstone and finished third at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The results mean Hamilton now leads Verstappen by eight points in the drivers championship, while Mercedes are 12 points ahead in the constructors'.
But an optimistic Horner is confident his team will reverse their recent fortunes when the second half of the season gets underway later this month.
“We’ve had some hugely bad luck in the last couple of races, it’s been pretty brutal in parts, in damage, in engines,” he said.
“But you know we’ll brush ourselves down and we’ll come out fighting in the second half of the championship.
“Obviously it’s been a tough couple of weekends but things can turn around very quickly as you’ve just seen, and there’s a long way to go in this championship.”
Ahead of the resumption, following the boos Hamilton received in Hungary, F1 legend Damon Hill called on Dutch fans to have a more positive reaction to the Brit ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix next month.
He said on theF1 Nation podcast: “Dutch fans, be nice to Lewis, will you?”
“Because he’s doing what he’s good at, and it’s going be fun. It’s going to be good. Because we’ve got a lot of listeners in Holland, who listen to us.
“They’re good sports, the Dutch. It’ll be great to have a Dutch Grand Prix, the first ever Dutch Grand Prix for how many years.”
