Perez replacement talk rubbished with another pick for Verstappen
Red Bull will soon have to hold discussions on who they want to drive alongside Max Verstappen beyond 2024, but Dutch racing driver doesn’t feel Yuki Tsunoda is the right fit for the current championship-leading team.
Red Bull went through a spate of drivers alongside Verstappen before settling on Perez, who helped the Dutchman win back-to-back world championships over the past two seasons. Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasy and Alex Albon struggled to live up to expectations alongside Verstappen at Red Bull.
But there’s been hints of the working relationship between Perez and Verstappen being at breaking point, particularly from the explosive Sao Paulo Grand Prix last year. When talking about the prospect of Tsunoda replacing Perez and joining Verstappen at Red Bull, Coronel was adamant it would be a bad idea and feels Albon would be a better pick.
“No, no, no, you can’t,” he said on the RacingNews365 Formula 1 podcast. “You are talking about a top team. Then I would rather take an Alex Albon than a Yuki.
“Yuki has of course been very important, also for the Honda deal, but I don’t see him just going to Red Bull in the future. He will need to become a little smarter, more handy and better.”
The idea of Tsunoda making the step up to Red Bull was recently brought up by AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost. “As far as I know, Sergio Perez still has a contract for next year,” Tost said.
