Mick Schumacher reportedly cost Haas over £2.5million in repairs following a whole host of crashes during his time with the American-based team. Schumacher’s stay at Haas came to an end at the recent Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, after his contract was not renewed ahead of the 2023 season.
The German star finds himself without a Formula 1 seat following his recent departure, and has since been replaced by Nico Hulkenberg for the next campaign. It was no secret of the damage he caused to his Haas car throughout his spell, and it seems this played a part in his recent axing from the team.
Across 2022, Schumacher crashed in Saudi Arabia, Monaco and in practice in Japan with his repair cost ticking past the £2.5million mark according to Bild. Throughout the 2022 season there was plenty of frustration within the Haas setup following the German youngster’s crash record.
There is no doubt the 23-year-old is an attractive asset for many F1 teams, no doubt thanks to the stature of his name within the sport thanks to the successes of his father Michael, as well as the German star’s undeniable talent and potential behind the wheel.

This aspect though was clearly outweighed by Schumacher’s recklessness for the American-based team, with boss Gene Haas alluding to this on the back of the youngster’s latest crash in Japan last month. Haas said: “In this sport, being kind of a rookie driver, the sport just doesn’t allow it.
“It’s just too expensive. If you make any mistakes in driver selection, or strategy, or tyre selection, it is costing you millions of dollars. I think Mick has got a lot of potential, but you know he costs a fortune and he’s wrecked a lot of cars that have cost us a lot of money that we just don’t have.

“Now, if you bring us some points, and you are [Max] Verstappen and you wreck cars, we’ll deal with it. But when you are in the back and you wreck cars, that’s very difficult.”
With Schumacher without a seat in 2023, it remains unknown as to what the future holds for the former Haas man. The German star could be offered a path back into F1 from Mercedes, with team principal Toto Wolff opening the door for Schumacher to become the Silver Arrows reserve driver for next season.
