Michael Schumacher’s wife ‘can’t help’ son Mick as German told to quit

Michael Schumacher: Netflix teases documentary in trailer

Michael Schumacher’s wife cannot help her son Mick establish an F1 career with the young German urged to give up by Bernie Ecclestone. The former F1 boss has warned Mick needs to “wake up from a dream” and accept his path to F1 is over after he was ditched by Haas last season.

The 24-year-old was unable to land himself another race seat after he being given his marching orders ahead of the final race of last season. The former F2 champion was handed a lifeline by Mercedes and signed as the team’s reserve driver ahead of the new campaign.

However, opportunities look few and far between in future seasons with Daniel Ricciardo also eyeing a race return. Ecclestone told RTL: “He has to forget this dream, because sooner or later we all wake up from a dream.

“He has to accept that and start thinking about what the alternative is and try to pursue that.” Ecclestone feels Mick needs someone to “lead him to success” on the racetrack with mother Corinna unable to help.

The family are supportive of his F1 career but Ecclestone feels they are unequipped for what Mick really needs to thrive behind the wheel. He added: “They’re not the kind of people who can help him. They can help him in many things, but not for a career as a Formula One driver.”

It’s not the first time Ecclestone has suggested that Schumacher’s career may have been affected by Michael’s tragic inability to help his son progress. Michael sustained brain injuries in a ski accident in 2013 and has not been seen publicly since.

The family are strict on privacy and only close friends of the seven-time champion are allowed access.

Ecclestone suggested with his father’s tutelage and experience behind the wheel, Mick could have well had a different career. Earlier this year, he told Sport Bild: “With Michael as a consultant at his side, Mick would be a regular driver in the cockpit of a good team.

“With all his experience, Michael could have given his son so many details. He would have shown him the right way, in terms of driving, but also politically.” Mick has previously also seemed to suggest his father’s accident has taken a toll on his career.

Speaking to filmmakers of the Schumacher documentary which aired on Netflix in 2021, he said: “I think dad and me, we would understand each other in a different way now. Simply because we speak a similar language – the language of motorsport. We would have had much more to talk about and that is where my head is most of the time, thinking that would be so cool. That would be it. I would give up everything just for that. Yes.

“Since the accident, of course, these experiences, these moments that I believe many people have with their parents are no longer present, or to a lesser extent. In my view, that is a little unfair.”
