Support for Lewis Hamilton amongst Express Sport readers has grown following Max Verstappen’s actions at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty for causing collisions with Hamilton on Turn 1 and Turn 27 in a controversial race.

Hamilton came out on top to win his third straight race, moving level on points with Verstappen in the drivers’ standings ahead of Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

But the record-chasing Brit was clearly frustrated with his title challenger’s dangerous driving on the team radio.

And the two penalty points Verstappen received on top of his time sanction totalled his tally to seven over the season.

Verstappen’s latest actions didn’t go down well with many Express Sport readers, and there is widespread support for Hamilton in a recent comment section going into Abu Dhabi.

One reader said: “Funny how Verstappen never understands any penalties that go against him… but is fully supportive of the ones given to Hamilton.”

A conspiracist added: “Watching the race yesterday, I thought Verstappen deliberately tried to take Hamilton out three times, and I mean out!

“If Hamilton didn’t finish and Verstappen didn’t either, he would have maintained his position at the top of the leaderboard, aka Michael Schumaker and Damon Hill!”

Another said: “Verstappen is dangerous, and it’s never his fault. Of course, Hamilton did not make the corner; he was pushed out of it.

“Verstappen grudgingly gave back the position by positioning his cat in the middle of the straight on the racing line whilst slowing to reduce Hamilton’s pace, then immediately accelerated to regain the lead. I predicted that at every opportunity, Verstappen would play dirty.”

In support of Hamilton, a fourth commented: “Well done, Lewis. I’m really glad Verstappen’s s***housery didn’t succeed. Verstappen is a danger and an embarrassment.

“He intentionally brakes late, misses corners and then rejoins, dragging Hamilton wide repeatedly. His actions yesterday make Brazil look mild.”

The 2021 F1 season has undoubtedly hosted one of the most exciting title fights in the sport’s history.

After years of domination, Hamilton has found a worthy challenger in Verstappen, who looked certain to dethrone the seven-time world champion a month ago.

Hamilton has proven why he’s considered one of the greatest drivers of all-time in recent weeks, though, with his comeback triumph from 10th on the grid in Brazil a notable turning point in the season.

Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be a spectacle, and many fans will be rooting for Hamilton to surpass Michael Schumacher with an eighth world title.
