Max Verstappen is “much more normal than people think” according to his former teammate at Red Bull. Alex Albon, who has joined Williams for the 2022 campaign, partnered Verstappen for the latter half of the 2019 campaign and remained his partner for the following season before being relegated to reserve driver.

His demotion owed to the arrival of Sergio Perez, who helped Verstappen dramatically claim his maiden F1 crown after a thrilling title race with Lewis Hamilton.

Albon meanwhile, has secured a new seat at Williams, where he’ll replace George Russell following his move to Mercedes to join Hamilton. The 25-year-old will race alongside Nicholas Latifi.

After being named the FIA Rookie of the Year in 2019, Thai-driver Albon failed to make the impact that Red Bull bosses hoped for in 2020, achieving just two podium finishes and ending with 105 of the team’s 319 points.

However, despite being reduced to the role of test and reserve driver thereafter, he maintained a good relationship with Verstappen, partly due to their mutual love of online gaming.

“We get along very well,” Albon said in an interview for the Formula 1 Magazine. “He loves gaming, I also like to play games. So we sometimes play together.

“He is actually a very ordinary boy, especially when you consider how well-known he is and what he has already achieved. Max is much more normal than many people would think.”

Verstappen’s bullish driving style last season, which ensured a tempestuous battle between him and Hamilton with the pair colliding at Silverstone and Monza, led to him being accused of arrogance in some quarters.

They also had a coming together in Saudi Arabia, with Verstappen accused of deliberately slowing down and making contact with Hamilton after being ordered to give up his place.

However, Albon refuted that notion, paying the 24-year-old an x-rated compliment in the process.

“He’s very honest, Max doesn’t do bull****,” he added. “He’s very direct. You could say that he is really Dutch!”

And Albon doesn’t believe the new world champion’s undeniable self-belief should be misconstrued as arrogance.

“He is confident, but certainly not arrogant,” Albon stated. “He just has confidence in what he does.”

And depite Albon’s move, a future reunion with Verstappen isn’t totally out of the question, with Red Bull releasing a statement in September hinting they would maintain relations with the driver.

“We have released Alex to become a Williams Racing driver in 2022 but retain a relationship with him that includes future options,” it read.
