Lewis Hamilton told to quit Mercedes and warned over going stale

Hamilton opens up on plans to remain in F1 ahead of 2023 season

Lewis Hamilton has been urged to “take on another challenge” to avoid “getting stale” as the Briton struggles to compete with Max Verstappen. Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan claimed he saw a “resurgence” in the seven-time champion when he left McLaren for Mercedes a decade ago.

Jordan feels this “great change” could be vital for Hamilton’s career as he calls on the seven-time champion to walk away from the Silver Arrows despite the pair’s previous dominance. Hamilton is yet to agree terms with the Silver Arrows with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Speaking to Express Sport, Jordan said: “Let’s put myself in the feet of Lewis Hamilton. What would I do? I personally think that he is, if not the most stylish driver ever, certainly in that league.

“We know winning seven world titles hasn’t been easy. I found a resurgence, I saw a great change in him after he left Mclaren having won the championship there.

“But then when he went to Mercedes, which alongside Niki Lauda, myself, we helped him to get to Mercedes, I think that I want him to get stale. I would like him to take on another challenge.”

Hamilton has been unable to compete for race wins and championships since new regulations came into force last season. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff even recently accepted they could lose Hamilton’s services if the team does not find a way back to the front.

Several pundits have linked Hamilton with a move to Ferrari as the only other squad capable of competing. Martin Brundle suggested Hamilton had “one more roll of the dice” while Gerhard Berger believes the Mercedes driver could “fix” the faltering Scuderia.

Jordan even described Hamilton moving to the Italian marque as a “match made in heaven”. He added: “There’s only one place he could go to in my opinion and that is Ferrari. A guy with the talent that he is, and I think it might be a [match made] in heaven.

“I think Ferrari need shaking up and I think Lewis Hamilton needs shaking up, if they are going to continue.” However, the seven-time champion has refused to be drawn into any transfer rumours and continues to pledge his allegiance to Mercedes.

The 38-year-old recently admitted he had “no plan” to leave the German marquee and even stressed he wanted to remain working at the team even after he gave up racing.
