Lewis Hamilton sends Michael Schumacher message as F1 legend celebrates 52nd birthday

Lewis Hamilton has taken the chance to send a message to Michael Schumacher on his birthday. The German legend turns 52 today but will sadly not get the chance to enjoy his special day as he remains at home following his tragic skiing accident over seven years ago.

Back in December 2013, Schumacher suffered a brain injury while descending the Combe de Saulire in the French Alps.

He was skiing with his son and Haas driver Mick when crossing an off-piste area of the resort when he, unfortunately, hit his head on a rock.

While Schumacher was wearing a helmet, the impact of the crash caused life-changing damage.

The seven-time world champion was kept in a coma by doctors before eventually regaining consciousness in 2014.

Schumacher remains at his family home in Gland, Switzerland where he continues his rehabilitation.

The world of F1 has taken the chance to wish the great a happy birthday today and followed suit, paying tribute to his hero.

He tweeted: “Happy Birthday Michael, thinking of you today.”

The 35-year-old is now level with Schumacher on seven World Drivers’ Championships and holds the record for most pole positions (98) and podium finishes (165).

Back in October, Hamilton also surpassed Schumacher’s record for most wins in F1 history with 92 at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

After equaling the record at the Eifel Grand Prix, Hamilton was presented with an old crash helmet by Schumacher’s son Mick.

It was initially a record that many doubted would ever be matched or broken but Hamilton dedicated his achievement to the “phenomenal” Schumacher, who is his inspiration.

“When you grow up watching someone you generally idolise them in terms of the quality of the driver they are but also what they are able to continuously do race on race, year on year, week on week,” he said.

“So it’s an incredible honour and it’s going to take some time to get used to it.”
