Lewis Hamilton responds to fan after offer to ‘sell his organs’ to see race

Lewis Hamilton commits to Mercedes until 2025

Lewis Hamilton issued a blunt four-word response to a fan who said they would ‘sell their organs’ if it meant they could see the Mercedes star and F1 teams at Kyalami for the mooted South Africa Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion is often flooded with requests from fans for autographs, tickets and simply his presence in certain countries due to his global popularity, but even the Briton may have been surprised by the latest proposal put forward.

While other drivers prefer to keep a low profile when away from the paddock, Hamilton makes a genuine effort to check in with ‘Team LH’ – the name given to his loyal followers – on a ragular basis.

But one supporter might have been a little overzealous in making clear their passion for motor racing when submitting a request to the 38-year-old.

On Tuesday, Hamilton tweeted a good morning message to his 8.1 million followers, writing: “Enjoyed the weekend off, how’s everyone?”

Amongst the hundreds of replies underneath the tweet, one fan @Farinho_10 replied: “Come to South Africa and I will sell my organs to go to the Kyalami GP, on God.”

In classic Hamilton style, the Silver Arrows driver issued a deadpan response, writing back: “Okay don’t do that.”

Clearly concerned for their safety, it is the kind of interaction that makes Hamilton a unique figure in F1, especially in engaging with his fanbase – even if it sometimes goes over the top.

But the exchange shows the clamour for F1 to return to South Africa for the first time since 1993, with Hamilton also keen to put himself to the test around the Kyalami circuit.

The South African Grand Prix has been floated as the next potential race to return to the calendar as Stefano Domenicali aims to bring F1 back to Africa for the first time. As it stands, it is the only habitable continent without an F1 race on the calendar.

When asked about racing there in May this year, Hamilton said: “It’s a real big dream for me to race in South Africa, and race in Africa in my career is a huge, huge dream for me.

“I know I have a big following out there and I know a lot of people are into Formula One now there so I’m pushing as hard as I can in the background and I’m going high up to make sure we have that race happen.”

Plans for the race to be brought back in 2024 have been shelved for now which means that, unfortunately, Hamilton will be powerless to grant their wish at least for the time being.
