Lewis Hamilton fears his championship dream may be in ‘trouble’ if Mercedes cannot overturn their speed deficit to rivals Red Bull with the Briton adamant he must win all four remaining F1 races to win the title this year.

Seven-time world champion Hamilton, 36, trails Red Bull rival Max Verstappen, 24, by 19 points heading into the Brazilian Grand Prix following the Dutchman’s dominant victory in Mexico last weekend.

The Briton has had to play catch up with Verstappen for the majority of the campaign, and he admitted that his hopes of breaking Michael Schumacher’s record for title victories may be in trouble if Red Bull maintain their speed in Brazil.

Max Verstappen leads by 19 points with just four races remaining of this Formula One season

‘There are still four races. Obviously 19 points is a lot of points. [Verstappen] has had a lot of wins this year,’ he told GP Fans.

‘With their superior speed [in Mexico], if they were to carry that into the next ones then we may be in trouble – or we will be in trouble.’

In reference to the maximum-downforce rear wings used by Verstappen and team-mate Sergio Perez, Hamilton said: ‘I don’t know if they’ll be using that huge wing [in Brazil] they had on [in Mexico]. We will find out when we get there, but I hope we’re closer.’

Hamilton says he must best his rival in all four races if he is to overturn his deficit to Verstappen

Hamilton is under no illusions that he must win every race if he is to claw back his 19-point deficit to Verstappen, but conceded that Red Bull may be out of reach with the finish line drawing closer.

‘I need to be winning every race. We need those extra points, not to lose those points, to try and regain [the lead],’ he added.

‘That was the goal going into the last race and the race before that, and before that and in Mexico.

‘You know, [I fear] they’re just too quick. We’re giving it absolutely everything we’ve got, but unfortunately it’s not enough at the moment to compete with them.’
