Lewis Hamilton breaks social media silence with new haircut after F1 heartbreak

Lewis Hamilton has returned to social media for the first time since his heartbreak at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last December.

The seven-time F1 world champion made his comeback in a Mercedes clip to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Hamilton can be seen sporting a new haircut alongside new Silver Arrows team-mate George Russell in a video which has been shared on Chinese social media site Weibo.

In the video, Hamilton looks at the camera and says: "Hi everyone, I wish you a Happy Chinese New Year. May the New Year bring you good luck and everything you wish for.

Russell then adds: "Hi guys. I’d like to wish you a Happy Chinese New Year. I’m excited to join the AMG family and become part of the world’s fastest family. See you soon and stay safe."

Hamilton has kept a low profile since his nightmare in the Middle East two months ago, vanishing from social media.

The 37-year-old appeared set to win a record-breaking eighth title before the race at the Yas Marina Circuit descended into farce.

His chances of winning the race – and with it the championship – began to unravel when Williams star Nicholas Latifi crashed into a wall with just a few laps remaining.

That brought out the safety car. And while Hamilton remained out on track to preserve race position, Max Verstappen dived into the pits for a fresh set of tyres.

To the surprise of Hamilton and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, race director Michael Masi then made the controversial decision to allow the five lapped cars between the two title rivals to unlap themselves.

Verstappen cosied up to the back of the former McLaren man, and with the advantage of much fresher tyres, outgunned Hamilton in a final lap shootout for the world championship.

As the Dutchman celebrated his first-ever crown, Hamilton and Mercedes were left licking their wounds and complaining that Masi had not applied the rules correctly.

After an initial failed appeal, the Silver Arrows decided not to take the matter further and Verstappen was officially confirmed as an F1 champion for the very first time.

The controversial way in which the fate of the title was decided has left some wondering whether Hamilton would walk away from the sport altogether.

But with just over a month to go until Hamilton and Verstappen are due to do it all over again, the Briton has now given his biggest hint yet that he'll be back on the grid for the 2022 season.

The new F1 season begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20.
