Lewis Hamilton will win his eighth world title this year, according to Romain Grosjean. Mercedes star Hamilton is aiming to overtake Michael Schumacher as the most successful driver in Formula One history. Six of the Brit’s seven titles have come with the Silver Arrows.
Team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will also be aiming to compete to win the first titles of their careers.
Hamilton ended speculation over his future last month by putting pen to paper on a new one-year contract.
He is level with Ferrari legend Schumacher on seven career world championship wins after finishing 124 points clear of Bottas in 2020, with Verstappen coming third.
And Grosjean is confident that Hamilton will pass Schumacher and once again rule the roost over his rivals.
“I put my money on an eighth title for Lewis this year,” Grosjean told Formule 1 Magazine.
Williams driver George Russell is widely expected to drive for Mercedes in the future.
Russell also gave his verdict on Hamilton’s title chances this season earlier this week and insists it is highly likely the 36-year-old will storm to an eighth victory.
“I think that’s pretty set in stone to be honest,” Russell said. “I have absolutely no doubt he’s going to be winning the eighth title this year.
“He’s done an amazing job he’s cruised over the last couple of years to that championship, and with the regulations not changing, I think he’s in a great position.”
Elsewhere, Grosjean has left F1 and will compete in the 2021 IndyCar Series for Dale Coyne Racing.
The 34-year-old has explained the differences he will face between the two disciplines.
“Indycar is a super championship, with drivers of a very high level and great races,” Grosjean added.
“In Indycar you also have all, basically, the same material. Formula 1 is different.
“It was the last few years fighting to get out of Q1 and then you almost had to see that as a victory. In Indycar the playing field is much more equal.
“Apart from the dampers, the development of which is free, everyone has largely identical material.
“Dale Coyne, who I drive for, has fewer resources and is smaller than a team like Ganassi or Penske, but if we get the car right, we can still get it right and have a chance.”
