George Russell has beaten Lewis Hamilton in qualifying to start the Belgian GP on the front row.

The Brit, racing for Williams, will start the grid second after edging out the seven-time Drivers' Champion as Red Bull's Max Verstappen leads the way at Spa.

He put in a time of 2:00:086, just 0.321 seconds behind the Dutchman to sit in the front row for the first time in his F1 career.

The 23-year-old has been rising up the ranks over the last three years behind the wheel of the British manufacturer's car.

But he had the beating of Hamilton in the rainy conditions, with the 36-year-old 0.013 seconds behind.

It is not the first time Russell has hit the front row in his career, though.

He stepped in his compatriot's Mercedes last season at the Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain to qualify second behind Valtteri Bottas.

But a pit-lane disaster involving a tyre confusion saw him end the race in ninth, with the fastest lap on the day a consolation prize.

Russell will look to use the position to get a first-ever F1 win in his career.

The 23-year-old's best finish so far this season came in the last race, crossing the line eighth at the Hungary Grand Prix before the summer break.

While Hamilton has endured struggles of his own as he looks to secure an eighth title, which would see him overtake Michael Schumacher as the most successful racer in history.
