Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso believes his motivation in Formula One comes from the prospect of winning a third world title, however admitted it may not happen with the Spaniard having just turned 40 in July.
After two years away from F1 racing in different categories, Alonso, a world champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, rejoined the grid at the start of the season with Alpine, much to the surprise of many in the paddock.
Since then he has shown increasingly impressive form up to the summer break, revealing “It’s been a tricky season for everyone, but we’ve shown progress as a team and the result in Hungary serves as a good example of this progression.”
Speaking to the BBC, Alonso added that his dream is to win a third world title but was realistic about how he may go about that and if it may be possible at all.

“Inside, I have the same spirit and the same racing ambitions, and winning the third championship is the only thing that motivates me,” said Alonso.
“But with time you realise that not everything is under your control, there are things you cannot maybe overcome.
“If you don’t get there, at least you tried and were as close to the third championship as possible.”
It was announced ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix that Alonso had signed a single-year deal to remain at Alpine alongside the Frenchman Esteban Ocon next season.
Yet when asked about his future in the sport, the 40-year-old was hesitant to reveal a specific date.

“I will see year by year,” added the Spaniard. “I will first have to enjoy continuing in F1 and feel I am fast enough.
“If one day I feel I am not competitive, I don’t feel the car, I am not enjoying the racing, I will be the first one to raise my hand and give an opportunity to a new guy.
“But hopefully that doesn’t happen so I can keep racing for, I don’t know, at least two, three, four years.
“I don’t think age is a problem. If you have more downforce, you go quicker in the corners; if you have more power, you go quicker on the straights. It’s not that with 20 years or 40 years (of age) this changes much.”
Alonso confirmed he did not speak to any other team about a 2022 contract.
His team-mate Ocon however, the shock winner in Hungary, signed a new three-year deal to stay at the Enstone team in June.
