The new F1 season is just around the corner, with Max Verstappen heading into the campaign as the reigning champion for the first time in his career. But with Lewis Hamilton looking to reclaim his crown, both drivers will have to get to grips with a number of key changes to their cars this year.

We’re now just two months away from the first race of the 2022 F1 season.

The campaign gets underway in Bahrain on March 20, where Mercedes’ Hamilton came out on top last year.

There will be 23 races in total throughout the calendar year, including a debut for the Miami GP in May.

But all of the drivers will need to come to terms with some changes to their cars this season.

Aerodynamics

F1 constructors will be able to change their cars’ flat floor for the first time this year.

The change will help the cars to have a cleaner wake, as a greater proportion of the downforce will be made from the underbody.

Engine

The main change to engines will come from the fuel that team’s use.

At least 10 percent of all fuel must be advanced sustainable ethanol – also known as E10.

Wheels

Wheelrim sizes will be increased to 18 inches from 13 inches, which will have a major impact on temperature.

The larger wheels will be less sensitive to changes in temperature, meaning drivers can stay out and persevere for longer.

Suspension

Drivers will also no longer be allowed to use hydraulic suspension or inerters attached to the suspension.

Extended mounting points for suspension has also been banned – which is a bigger problem for Mercedes than anyone else.

The F1 season is already coming together, with a whole host of team changes agreed.

Valtteri Bottas won’t be driving for Mercedes this year, for the first time since 2016.

He’ll be heading to Alfa Romeo, and will be replaced by former Williams driver George Russell.

Russell had previously raced for Mercedes while Hamilton was recovering from Covid.
