F1 fans have conspiracy theory as Albon spotted leaving with Christian Horner

Formula One fans have a conspiracy theory after Williams driver Alex Albon was spotted leaving the Monaco Grand Prix with Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

Williams driver Albon played a part in Max Verstappen's third-place finish in Monte Carlo, holding up title rival Charles Leclerc just before his second pit stop – a crucial part in the race and what was a turning point in the event.

Albon was shown blue flags, signalling a faster car approaching and requiring him to move out of the way, but the Williams man did not – and fans were left scratching their heads as to why he didn't do as was expected.

The discussion around the incident increased after the race when Albon was pictured leaving Monaco with Red Bull chief Christian Horner, sparking conspiracy theories suggesting that the young driver knew exactly what he was doing.

After the clip was shared on social media, @Vosseas stated: 'Let the conspiracy theories begin' to which @WillemWoerd replied: 'Is it still a theory when it's this obvious?'

The fact that Albon used to be a Red Bull driver and, until this season, was still on the team's young driver programme has added further fuel to the fire – increasing suggestions that Albon had outside influence and was encouraged to impact Leclerc's race.

Red Bull confirmed prior to the 2022 season that they had released Albon so that he could make a return to the Formula One grid with Williams but have maintained a relationship with 'future options'.

“We have released Alex to become a Williams Racing driver in 2022, but retain a relationship with him that includes future options," a Red Bull statement said.

Numerous drivers on the F1 grid have a relationship with some of the 'elite' teams, with AlphaTauri duo Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly also having close ties to their sister team, while Haas driver Mick Schumacher is in Ferrari's young driver programme.

Meanwhile, Mercedes previously had both George Russell and Esteban Ocon in their junior driver programme before both were promoted to slots on the Formula One grid.
