Winner at Silverstone in 1994, Damon Hill knows a thing or two about excelling at the British Grand Prix.

With crowds over the weekend anticipated to hit 480,000, there are plenty descending on the Northamptonshire circuit with memories of races new and old.

For Hill there are an abundance of great memories, from winning the race ahead of Michael Schumacher to a Lewis Hamilton masterclass in the rain in 2008. He has served up his top five for Mail Sport…

Attention will once again turn to Silverstone ahead of the British Grand Prix on Sunday

Damon Hill knows a thing or two about excelling at the British Grand Prix after winning in 1994

1: Nigel Mansell on Nelson Piquet IN 1987

It was truly fantastic. The way he overtook Nelson heading into Stowe had everyone on their feet and holding their breath because the two of them looked so close. It was classic Nigel.

He never did anything without a huge amount of drama and panache and this was exactly that. It was one of those moments you couldn’t believe what you were seeing.

2: Me winning in 1994!

I started on pole and it was a drama-filled day with plenty of controversy but it was a great experience to win that — especially because my dad came close a few times but never did win it. Michael drama aside, it was one for the Hill treasure cabinet.

3: Hamilton’s 2008 rain dance

There was so much expectation built up around Lewis but he just showed everyone his genius in conditions like that, winning by a minute, dominating the field.

Given the tragedies we have seen recently in wet racing, it really is astonishing when you see something like this in the torrential rain we had that day. It is what separates the truly great drivers from the rest.

4: Senna’s jaw-dropping qualifying in 1991

I have to put this one in there. Watching him literally hanging on to this Honda v12 engine trying to get ahead of Mansell’s time was incredible. It was one of those that you simply watched with your mouth open.

5: Crossing the line behind Mansell in 1992…five laps behind!

I was in a Brabham and I had just qualified for my first race. Nigel went past me, I was testing for Williams so I knew the car, but he kept overtaking me and it was five times. Eventually, we crossed the line and I remember a bloke ran across the track. He ran across in front of me as he was waiting for Nigel to cross the line.

I didn’t see him coming!
