Alonso shows true colours in unseen Australian GP red flag footage
Formula One preview: A lap of the Australian Grand Prix
Fernando Alonso has been praised for helping out his Aston Martin colleagues after unseen footage from the Australian Grand Prix emerged on social media. The Spaniard has earned a reputation for complaining and criticising his teams in the past, but it seems the veteran racer has turned over a new leaf with the British manufacturer after his act of goodwill was spotted in Melbourne.
During one of three red flag stoppages in the race in Melbourne, drivers were allowed to step out of their vehicles and return to their teams before the race restarts as the FIA rearranged a standing start on the grid.
While some drivers often take refuge in the garage and wave to the fans during the stoppage, Alonso decided to maximise his free time and keep busy.
In a compilation video that emerged on F1’s official Tik Tok channel, Alonso can be seen helping Aston Martin’s team with moving heavy loads of equipment around the pitlane in a refreshing down-to-earth move from the two-time world champion. The video was shared by other Tik Tok users on the platform, with F1 fans hailing Alonso as ‘good guy nando’.

In a race littered with drama and incidents in Melbourne, the FIA race director brought out the red flag on three separate occasions with Max Verstappen claiming his second victory of the season ahead of Lewis Hamilton under safety car conditions.
Alonso secured his third podium in as many races to keep himself in the hunt for an unlikely championship battle despite being hit from behind by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. He now heads into the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on April 30 with 45 points from the first three races, with only Red Bull stars Verstappen and Sergio Perez ahead of him in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
The former Renault, Ferrari and McLaren star’s act of kindness is nothing that hasn’t been seen before from F1 drivers. But considering Alonso once decided to sunbathe in a deck chair while marshals moved his broken down McLaren car in Brazil, it speaks to his new attitude since linking up with F1’s new powerhouse.

The 41-year-old has spoken about his happiness at racing with Aston Martin since he announced his surprise move from Alpine last summer to replace the retired Sebastian Vettel.
And it seems his positive mood has been reflected by his willingness to assist his work companions to lighten their own workload, speaking out about how he feels welcome after linking up with Lawrence Stroll’s team.
“Since the first day at Aston Martin, I felt exactly the same values from the people around me,” he said in February.
“We have the investment, we have the facilities, and we have the talent, so it’s just a matter of time. Unfortunately, I’m not 20, but I will do my best to help the team.”
