Rangers fire team president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton in shocking move

In a shocking turn of events, the New York Rangers fired team president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton on Wednesday.

The news was first reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet and confirmed by the USA TODAY Network, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Associate GM Chris Drury will take over as both team president and GM for the time being, although it remains unclear if it'll be an interim title or a long-term arrangement.

The Rangers are scheduled to host the Washington Capitals at 7 p.m. Wednesday and have only three games remaining in their season. They were officially eliminated from playoff contention following Monday's 6-3 loss to the Capitals.

The stunning news comes of the heels of the Rangers issuing a scathing statement on Tuesday in which they were overtly critical of the NHL and its Department of Player Safety for failing to suspend Washington forward Tom Wilson following what they deemed a "horrifying" incident in Monday's game that left star forward Artemi Panarin injured.
