Super Bowl 2021 prize money: How much Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs can earn

NFL: Brady and Mahomes prepare for Super Bowl LV

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs duke it out for Super Bowl glory this evening (11.30pm kick-off UK time) as Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes look to add to their totals by again lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Kansas City defeated the San Francisco 49ers in last year’s Super Bowl and no team in the American Football Conference or the National Football Conference bettered their 14-2 regular season record this year.

The Chiefs only lost to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5 and to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 17, when they rested multiple starters, and have pushed aside the Clevelend Browns and the Buffalo Bills to get to another NFL championship game.

The Bucs, by contrast, went 11-5 in the regular season to enter the wildcard round and saw off the Washington Football Team before getting past the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and Lambeau Field respectively.

That sets up a highly-anticipated showdown between six-time Super Bowl winner Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time, and Mahomes, the likeliest to dethrone the New England Patriots icon in the next few decades.

Winning tonight would put Mahomes on two Super Bowl triumphs in two seasons and would see him become only the second QB in the 21st century after Brady to win on the grandest of stages in back-to-back years.

Brady did so with the Patriots in 2004 and 2005 but Green Bay Packers legend Bart Starr and Pittsburgh Steelers icon Terry Bradshaw are the only two to win back-to-back Super Bowl MVPs.

Mahomes can join the duo this evening with the Chiefs pivot having been named the best player of the 2020 Super Bowl when Kansas City won 31-20 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.

Whichever QB can inspire their franchise to glory will help their team-mates pocket a tidy bonus on top of their earnings.

Each player of the winning Super Bowl team will be net an $130,000 bonus, with it understood every player on the losing team will still take home an $65,000 bonus.

By comparison, all of the players on the Chiefs and Bucs’ teams raked in $59,000 from winning their conference championship showdowns against the Buffalo Bills and the Packers respectively.

Their divisional round triumphs, the Chiefs beating the Cleveland Browns while the Bucs got the better of the New Orleans Saints, saw each player earn $33,000.

The Buccaneers have not won the Super Bowl since 2003 while Kansas City’s 2020 triumph was their first appearance in the NFL championship game for 50 years.

Tampa Bay reaching the Super Bowl is the first time ever that a franchise hosting the event at their home stadium, as the Bucs’ Raymond James Stadium will this evening, have contested the game.

This is the third time the Raymond James Stadium will have hosted the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens winning the 2001 Super Bowl and the Steelers victorious at the same venue in 2009.
