Patrick Mahomes picked up an ankle injury in the first half of the Kansas City Chiefs’ crunch playoff game with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but managed to return to lead his team to a huge win.

Mahomes is the face of the franchise and is widely regarded as the difference between the Chiefs getting to the Super Bowl and falling short, and it therefore will have come as a huge blow to the team to see him limping early on.

The star quarterback got caught between two Jaguars opponents and appeared to twist his ankle, leaving him limping off the field seconds later.

He quickly hopped back on for the next play, but did not appear at full fitness as the Chiefs had to make do with a field goal a few moments later.

Mahomes, 27, then made his way back to the sidelines to be treated by the team’s head athletic trainer, and was questionable to return before halftime with back-up Chad Henne taking snaps in his place.

He then begged coaches to return and made his way back out to the field for the second half, guiding his team to a 27-20 win to book their place in a fifth straight AFC Championship title game.

Mahomes threw for two touchdowns and 195 yards, completing 22 of his 30 attempted throws.

Henne, meanwhile, also did his bit when called upon, throwing for a single touchdown and 23 yards, and completing 5/7 throws.
