Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett dies aged 35 as Tom Brady leads tributes
Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett has tragically died aged 35. The former New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens player drowned in Destin, Florida, according to The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
In a statement from the sheriff’s office it was reported that Mallet was one of a ‘group of individuals were reportedly [struggling] offshore’. The statement went on to add that the former quarterback ‘was not breathing when lifeguards found and pulled him out,’ and that ‘tragically lifesaving measures weren’t successful.’
Tributes have since been paid to Mallet, including Tom Brady, who was his New England Patriots team-mate between 2011 and 2013. The seven-time Super Bowl champion posted a tribute on social media alongside a picture of the pair.
“We lost a great man,” Brady said on Instagram. “Thank you for everything Ryan. Praying for the Mallett family and all their loved ones tonight.”
Former NFL defensive end JJ Watt also paid tribute to Mallet via social media, saying: “Horrible news to read about Ryan Mallett. Gone way too soon. Rest in Peace brother.”
The Patriots have since shared a message of condolence. “The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of former quarterback Ryan Mallett,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the Mallett family, his former teammates and all who are mourning his loss.”
Mallett spent seven seasons in the NFL, turning professional back in 2011. After being selected as a third round draft pick he joined the New England Patriots and spent his final season as the second-choice quarterback behind Tom Brady.
