Broncos reveal $100 million upgrades to Empower Field at Mile High

In competition with people’s couches, flatscreen televisions and basements, Broncos team president Damani Leech knew the organization had to make a meaningful impact towards the stadium renovations so fans would continue to flock to Empower Field at Mile High on Sundays.

On Friday, the team showcased stadium upgrades that were worth $100 million, the single-largest capital improvement in the stadium’s 22-year history, highlighted by a brand-new scoreboard.

“It’s been exciting,” Leech said. “Over the course of the past season, when we traveled to other stadiums, you really (understood) the responsibility we have to provide a great experience for our fans.”

Leech said the process started with a vision of enhancing the gameday experience from an operational and entertainment standpoint. He understands fans won’t be able to experience everything the stadium provides, but they can at least enjoy something new.

Leech said “a decent chunk” of the $100 million went into the scoreboard — now the fifth largest in the NFL. The Broncos also added new signage for retired numbers.

The stadium upgrades will provide an immediate and impactful change. In regards to a new stadium, Leech said the organization is in the early stages of the analysis process.

“That’s a separate issue,” Leech said. “(Ownership is) making this commitment to this stadium only for the near and immediate term.”

Here’s a look at some of the upgrades that fans will see at Empower Field this season:

Team store: The Broncos’ team store underwent a 3,000-square-foot expansion, featuring expanded checkout areas. The store will feature merchandise dedicated to the “Snowcapped” alternate helmets and exclusive items that will change for each game.

Upgraded suites: Leech said the organization upgraded nearly 130 suites inside Empower Field. Everything inside the suites, from the ceiling to the carpet and countertops, was redone to improve the experience and create more space.

“We noticed as some of the suite holders (were) using the suites during the summer concert series, we got a lot of positive feedback,” Leech said.

Breckenridge Bourbon Club: The all-inclusive lounge is over 9,000 square feet and will welcome more than 350 members during Saturday’s game against the Rams. The club will be open three hours before kick-off and an hour after the game ends.

Stadium art: The Broncos had local artists create four murals around the 100-level concourse. One of the murals, located outside the team store, features John Elway, Steve Atwater, former owner Pat Bowlen and other Broncos greats. The mural is still in progress.

Concession stands: Empower Field will have new concession stands that feature self-checkout so fans can quickly return to their seats. The South Deck of the stadium will now feature a permanent concession stand.
