Broncos place right tackle Ja’Wuan James on non-football injury list – The Denver Post

The Ja’Wuan James Error with the Broncos is over.

Three days after he sustained an Achilles injury during training, James was placed on the team’s non-football injury list Friday according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

With this move, the Broncos essentially indicate they intend to withhold James’ $10 million guaranteed base salary because he was injured away from the team facility.

James does not count toward the Broncos’ 90-man roster limit.

James’ injury is expected to keep him out the entire season and the Broncos can leave him on the non-football injury list or simply cut him.

The Broncos can also try to re-coup the pro-rated portion of James’ $12 million signing bonus ($3 million) and/or decline to pay for his surgery and rehabilitation.

James signed a four-year, $51 million contract in March 2019, but played only 63 offensive snaps in three games because of knee issues, and opted out of the 2020 season due to coronavirus concerns.

James is signed through 2023 so the Broncos would still absorb dead-money hits in 2022-23 (at least $3 million per season) if they don’t go after his signing bonus.
