World’s richest athlete necks beer after US Open loss to help ‘ease the defeat’

American tennis billionaire Jessica Pegula necked a beer while in her press conference to ease the pain of her US Open quarter-final defeat to Iga Swiatek.

The 28-year-old is the daughter of oil and gas tycoon billionaire Terry Pegula and was the last American hope in the women's singles competition.

But she had no answers against the brilliant Swiatek, and after her defeat, Pegula chugged a beer while speaking to the media at Flushing Meadows. When complimented for her choice of drink, she said: "Thanks, I'm trying to pee for doping. Although it does help ease the loss."

Pegula has arguably had her best season as a professional tennis star after achieving a career-high of No 7 in the world rankings, and reaching three Grand Slam quarter-finals.

The American beat two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-3 6-2 to reach the US Open quarter-final before bowing out to world number one Swiatek – losing 6-3 7-6.

"I’m happy with how I fought back in the second set but it's still a tough loss," added Pegula.

"I'm like f*** three quarter-finals, it just sucks. I wish I could have done it here at my home slam but I guess not. I wish I didn't have to play Iga (Swiatek) at every quarter-final or Ash Barty.

"It sucks. I had a great year at the slams but I'm a little deflated right now. I'm not really happy. It just sucks to lose.

"It could have been different tonight, but I'm sure tomorrow I'll wake up and see more of the positives for sure." Her father Terry has a net worth of £7billion ($8.1bn), according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index and Jessica is one of five children.

Pegula has been a professional tennis player for 11 years and has won £2.2m ($2.53m) this season alone and has earned £4.6m overall ($5.33m).

"I have never wanted people to think I was given things," she told BBC Sport. "I think I have definitely earned my stripes in the tennis world. There are people on the outside who maybe don't understand, who make assumptions."
