Wimbledon slams stars for nicking food as coach spotted taking 27 yoghurts

Offbeat news from the world of sport

Wimbledon bosses have had to tell tennis’ millionaire stars to stop plundering the tournament’s grub for free – after a coach was spotted walking off with 27 YOGHURTS.

Championship chiefs have emailed the players urging them to show restraint in their use of a daily £90 personal allowance for food and drink.

The system is designed to make sure those preparing for big matches do not need to worry about bringing their own snacks to the famous tennis club.

But sources said some have been treating the allowance as a target instead of a cap – leaving restaurants drained of supplies. One coach walked off 27 probiotic yoghurts in order to use up his £90.

All players – including legends – have now been asked to be more 'judicious' in their use of the allowance.

Though it's perhaps understandable why stars are making their most of the allowance given the extraordinary price of food and drink at the grounds. Fans were left staggered after a fan shared a snap of a pint on Twitter – before revealing it cost £7.10.

The fan was replying to 'Sport Scran', who had shared an £11 chicken and chips purchased at SW19. While the chicken and chips, with a side of coleslaw, lacked imagination to say the least – tennis fans were more concerned with the price of the pint.

Even by London's lofty standards, £7.10 for a pint is eye-opening. And some fans even joked 'how much was the deposit' after comparing the drink to soaring housing prices in the English capital.

"Thought to myself that I'd really like to go to Wimbledon next year and now performing a U-turn in my head after seeing this," one fan joked.

"If you like tennis you can afford it," one fan suggested. While another joked: "How much was the deposit?"
