Tiger Woods will not face charges over the horror crash that left him needing major surgery on both his legs, after authorities confirmed the golf legend wasn't drunk or on drugs during the incident.

The 45-year-old is said to be lucky to be alive after the crash, which saw his car roll off the road in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Woods was the only subject involved in the accident and is currently recovering in hospital.

But the athlete will not face charges and was not intoxicated, police have confirmed.

“We don’t contemplate any charges whatsoever in this crash," Sheriff Deputy Carlos Gonzalez told a news conference today.

"This remains an accident. Accident is not a crime. They do happen, unfortunately.

"The Deputy on the scene assessed the condition of Tiger Woods and there was no evidence of any impairment whatsoever.

"He was lucid – no evidence of alcohol, no evidence of any medication or narcotics.

"He was not drunk… we can throw that one out."

Gonzalez was the officer that arrived on scene, shocked to discover it was Woods being rescued from the car.

He said: "He was able to speak to me. He seemed calm and lucid. I kept Mr Woods calm until LA County fire department arrived on the scene.

"He told me his name was Tiger, and at that point I immediately recognised him.

"I do think the fact that he was wearing a seat belt and that the vehicle safety features worked as designed by the manufacturer likely resulted in either reducing his injury or saving his life.

"I did consider pulling him out myself, but I decided that it would be better to wait for the fire department, since they have the specialised tools and training to remove people safely from vehicles like that.”
