Tennis star Alcaraz hits ‘one of the greatest shots ever’ in US Open thriller

Rising star Carlos Alcaraz lived up to his growing reputation with a dazzling shot which had the Arthur Ashe crowd on their feet in disbelief at the US Open.

The 19-year-old produced an incredible moment set to be replayed for years to come when he returned Jannik Sinner's effort with an unbelievable behind-the-back shot. As Sinner hit back, Alcaraz picked up the point with a swagger that led to deafening screams in New York.

The teenager was greeted with a standing ovation after his gravity-defying shot with many branding it one of the greatest shots of all time. One viewer said: "If this match is the future of men's tennis, we are in for a great era ahead."

And another wrote: "Carlos Alcaraz just hit the greatest shot I’ve ever seen in my life."

While a third posted: "If this match is the future of men's tennis, we are in for a great era ahead."

And perhaps there is the new era of tennis on the horizon as the world looks to the future with Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic all approaching the end of their careers. Sinner, only 21 himself, is a true talent from Italy and there could be more battles to come in the future.

But it was Alcaraz who emerged victorious on Wednesday night in an absolute thriller in the US Open quarter-finals. The youngster saved a match point before landing a 6-3 6-7 (7-9) 6-7 (0-7) 7-5 6-3 win over Sinner.

And the Arthur Ashe crowd were treated to a late night spectacle with the match running on until 2.50am – a record latest time. Alcarez became the youngest man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since Nadal in 2005 at the French Open, where he will face American Frances Tiafoe.

"I still don't know how I did it. The level I played of high quality tennis. It's unbelievable," the Spaniard said. "I always say you have to believe in yourself all the time. Hope is the last thing you use. I believed in myself, my game."
