Team GB almost crash ‘forgetting to stear’ in chaotic end to coxless four final
Team GB almost caused a dangerous crash in the men’s coxless four losing their heads in the closing stages.
Rowers Matt Rossiter, Sholto Carnegie, Rory Gibbs and Oliver Cook veered out of lane and were heading straight for their Italian rivals.
They were battling hard for a medal and lost all composure before having to straighten up and effectively ending their hopes of taking something home.
It is the first time since 1996 that Team GB have failed to win the gold in the men’s coxless four.
Australia ultimately prevailed to clinch gold, while Romania took silver and Italy recovered from the interference to take bronze.
After the blunder, an emotional Cook admitted to the BBC: ”I do (have the steering).
“I need to diagnose it but I feel I screwed up a bit and as I was closing in at the end and taking big strokes at the end going for the line I forgot the steering and that’s what cost us to be honest, cost us a medal.
"All I can say is thank you to everyone who stayed up to watch tonight and I’m really sorry we’re not coming back with something."
Team GB were still in contention coming into the final 500m.
But their failure to steer meant having to suddenly slow down at the crucial moment to avoid a collision with Italy.
It was a heartbreaking way for Team GB to see their dominance of the event end, especially as they came away without any medal.
While the rowers flopped, though, Team GB’s swimmers shined in the water.
Gold was won in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the men's 4x200m relay.
