Snooker ace suffers ‘worst hangover ever’ after Mark Selby heroics
Snooker ace Kyren Wilson suffered the ‘worst hangover ever’ after rival Mark Selby hit a 147 in the World Snooker Championship final. Wilson was set to win a cool £55,000 for his first-round maximum break against Ryan Day – the 13th total clearance in Crucible history.
The World Snooker Championship has a prize fund of £40,000 for a 147, and £15,000 for the highest break. Wilson went out of a boozy lunch with his wife Sophie while the final was taking place only to discover the next day that Selby had matched his 147 accomplishment and would share the £55,000 maximum prize fund.
After losing out on £27,5000 of prize money, Wilson was asked about Selby’s maximum. The former World Championship finalist joked with BBC Radio 5 Live: “I’ve told (my wife) Sophie to hold back on the shopping trip. We were booked in for Harrods and we’re now going to Primark!
“Me and Sophie went for a bottomless brunch the day that he had the 147 so I was quite worse for wear and I woke up the next morning to about 20 notifications saying: ‘Oh my god, how do you feel about that?’ One of them was Shaun Murphy which I really appreciated. So waking up £30,000 lighter I’ve got to say is right up there with one of the worst hangovers I’ve ever had.”
Due to the snooker rivals regularly competing at the same World Snooker Tour events, Wilson said that the families of both players are friendly. He added: “Sophie (his wife) is in regular contact with Mark’s wife. It’s a family on tour isn’t it so we’re all kind of friendly.”
Wilson sent a classy message to Selby during the World Championship final despite seeing his prize money significantly cut. He said: “That awkward moment you wake up 30k lighter this morning. Congratulations to Mark Selby on making a 147 in last nights world championship final lots of love the Wilsons.”

A maximum – 15 reds, 15 blacks and all the colours – is rarely seen and has only been completed 189 times in the sport since Steve Davis managed it for the first time in 1982. However, it comes as nothing new to World No 7 Wilson, who has completed a maximum five times during his career.
Despite Wilson completing the rare accomplishment during the first round, he was dumped out of the World Snooker Championship in the following match after a disappointing 13-2 defeat by John Higgins. For reaching the second round, Wilson also won an additional £10,000 in prize money while runner-up Selby was given £200,000 for his final appearance.
