Six genital injuries including ruptured testicle after Olympian’s frozen penis

Injuries are not an uncommon occurrence for sportsmen, although they vary in their severity and level of pain.

For most athletes, the thought of an injury to their genitals is one they fear the most and hope to never have the misfortune of having to endure.

This fate unfortunately befell Finnish skiier Remi Lindholm during the Winter Olympics in Beijing earlier this month as adverse weather conditions and freezing temperatures saw him suffer a frozen penis.

Following Lindholm's most painful of injuries here is his and five more of sport's most gruesome genital injuries that show no sportsman is safe.

Remi Lindholm's frozen penis

Lindholm was competing in the men's 50km cross country skiing when he suffered his injury, with the weather causing the race to be reduced to 30km.

He used a heat pack in an attempt to thaw out his genitals as he crossed the line in 28th, having previously suffered a similar injury a year earlier.

Speaking after the race, he told Finnish outlet Iltalehti: "You can guess which body part was a little bit frozen when I finished – it was one of the worst competitions I’ve been in. It was just about battling through.”

Luckily, Lindholm was able to see the funny side to his viral fame afterwards, though, sharing a news story to his Instagram story along with a crying laughing emoji.

Igor Plastun requires stitches

Following a collision with his goalkeeper, Gent defender Igor Plastun required stitches in his penis after suffering a horrific injury in August 2020.

Thomas Kamisnki accidentally kneed Plastun in the groin as they both attempted to deal with a cross, leaving the Ukrainian rolling around on the floor.

Plastun was substituted immediately and could be seen having his injury stitched up by the side of the pitch by the club's medical staff.

To add further insult to injury, opponents Sint-Truiden were able to snatch the winning goal with Plastun and Kaminski's collision leaving an empty goal.

Jack Hughes ruptures a testicle

Warrington Wolves star Jack Hughes thought he would be able to run off his injury after being kneed against Catalans Dragons in 2019.

However, he soon noticed that his testicle had swelled to an alarming size as he suffered "the worst pain he'd ever experienced".

Despite this, though, Hughes soldiered on for another 35 minutes and even offered to walk to the nearest hospital instead of waiting for an ambulance.

Hughes later discovered he had ruptured his testicle and missed two matches before returning for the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.

Alastair Cook forced off

During the first test of the 2015 Ashes series, England captain Alastair Cook was left writhing in pain on the floor after an edge from Steve Smith bounced into his crotch.

Cook was left in agony, while team-mate Joe Root saw the funny side after he was pictured laughing as he attempted to comfort his skipper.

Former team-mate Graeme Swann was more sympathetic, admitting in the commentary box: "The more I watch it the worse it gets. Alastair Cook has got an exceptionally high pain threshold too."

The injury proved too much for Cook and he was forced off injured as England carried on without him.

Billy Burns' testicular contusion

With baseballs regularly thrown and hit at speeds in excess of 100mph, it is not rare for a player to take one in the genitals.

The risk of injury is greatly reduced by wearing a cup, although, this did little for Oakland's Billy Burns in July 2015, whether he was wearing one at all.

Whilst Burns was batting, a pitch skipped up off the plate and smacked him straight in the genitals, leading to a painful injury.

Burns' injury was confirmed by the stadium announcer, who informed the crowd that he had suffered a testicular contusion.

Christian Lohsen has testicle removed

The risk of injury is fairly high for mixed martial artists when it comes to stepping into the cage for a fight, but most would hope to avoid such pain during training.

This was not the case for Christian Lohsen back in November when the Professional Fighters League athlete had his testicle ruptured by a knee.

He shared an update from hospital and confirmed that the injury had caused him to have his testicle removed.

Lohsen was able to see the funny side, though, as he referred to himself as the "one ball wonder" and joked about 'no nut November' in an Instagram post.
