Racing punter scoops £57k but could’ve bagged £425k after last horse in bet wins

One racing punter won over £57,000 over the weekend, however it could have been a mammoth £425,000 after he cashed out before the last leg of his bet. The racing fan placed a Lucky 31 and five-fold accumulator ahead of this weekend's racing at Aintree.

The Betfair customer included Riders Onthe Storm (6/1), Honor Grey (9-1) and Dingo Dollar (12-1) at Aintree as well as 7-2 chance Spring Meadow at Ffos Las on his bet, and to his delight his opening four selections all won.

Following four wins from four, the punter was offered a cash out on both of his bets – £21,756 from the Lucky 31 and £36,212 from the accumulator after initially staking £67 across both punts.

With over £57,000 sitting their available to the racing fan, he still had one runner to race, 15-8 favourite Credrojava in the 5.05 at Aintree, who would secure the customer nearly half-a-million pounds with victory. Despite this, the punter chose to take the cash out with his final leg still to play out.

And whilst he cashed in a hefty amount, it could have been so much more as Credrojava backed up the favourite price by defeating Ruby Island by half a length. The £57,000 win was no doubt a bittersweet victory for the punter.

Upon the drama, Betfair's Barry Orr spoke out on the bets and offered his good luck to the punter. Per The Racing Post, he said: "The customer elected to cash out and bank nearly £58k for his £67 bet.

I’m sure it wasn’t an easy decision to make and he obviously had mixed emotions having seen the last leg win but I imagine there are very few people who wouldn’t have banked the cash.

"His selections were inspired and the second leg, Dingo Dollar, traded at 251-1 in running on the Betfair Exchange but managed to get the job done. Good luck to him." There were some mixed emotions from other racing fans when it came to assessing the punter's cash out decision.

One fellow fan – @LiamBillo9 – took to Twitter to write: "No coming back from this mate, I'd never bet or even watch racing again, still a good win albeit," whilst @NeilMur97071523 added: "Cashing out on a 15/8 why do the horse then ???"
