Paulina Gretzky "stayed away from athletes" before meeting golfer Dustin Johnson

Paulina Gretzky "stayed away from athletes" before she met her husband and golf star Dustin Johnson.

The couple tied the knot back in April after dating for 10 years and have two children, but they may have never got together had Gretzky chosen to stick with her plans to avoid relationships with sportsmen. Gretzky was fresh out of seeing another athlete before she and Johnson started going out in 2012.

The model, actress and singer revealed last year she had originally planned to turn her back on dating athletes after that relationship ended, before becoming romantically involved with former Masters and US Open champion Johnson.

Speaking to the Pillows and Bear podcast, via the Toronto Sun, she explained: "How I looked at it was like, I don't ever want to date somebody that's an athlete because, whether or not it was me or not, I felt like it was like an achievement for them.

"Being with me, dating me, whatever it was, it just didn't feel authentic. I truly stayed away from athletes, I really did."

Prior to beginning her relationship with Johnson, Gretzky had previously been linked to ice hockey star Jarrett Stoll. That relationship is not her only link to the NHL, with her dad being four-time Stanley Cup winner Wayne Gretzky.

Her and Johnson are now happily married, having first met in 2009 before they started dating three years later. They got engaged in 2013 and now have two children together.

Pop star Gretzky also has a racy Instagram account with one million dedicated followers, who she regularly wows with her raunchy snaps, which have even seen her go viral several times.

As for Johnson, the 38-year-old is one of a number of golfers to have left the PGA Tour this year to sign up for the controversial LIV Golf Tour.

He is currently competing at the Open Championship this weekend and heads into his third round in fifth place on nine under par after making the cut. Johnson will tee off at 3:35pm on Saturday alongside his compatriot Scottie Scheffler.
